Chicago
Really good Cubano. From what I hear, great BYOB spot to get drunk on a budget with a group.
Québec City
Dinner was pretty mediocre. We didn't get drinks, but it looks like this place might shine more as a cocktail bar.
Istanbul
Fun spot to see them do the Turkish ice cream tricks, but there are a million of those places and this one isn't special.
Montréal
The steak sandwich was excellent. Perfect for a picnic in Mount Royal Park.
Istanbul
Best wetburger I had in Istanbul.
Sofia
Had a beer here as part of a bar crawl. Nothing too memorable, but nice location in a park.
Sofia
I'm a fan of all the duck decorations, including the duck disco balls.
Highly recommend
Chicago
Little Italian grocery store with my favorite subs in Chicago. Also home to the girthiest pickle that's ever entered my mouth. Don't forget to go hard on the giard.
Highly recommend
Montréal
My friend from Montreal called this the best food in the city, and it lived up to those high expectations. I won't bother recommending anything specific since the menu changes frequently, and everything we had was so damn good. This is the most expensive place I visited in Montreal, but well worth it. Perfect for a date night. Sit at the bar as possible (you can get the full food menu) where you can watch them cooking in the kitchen.
Bloomington
Nothing special. Decent food.
Montréal
Dumplings were fine. Not the best I've had, even in Montreal.
Highly recommend
Montréal
Little Italian deli with some of THE BEST food I had in Montreal. We got the Porchetta and the Philly Hoagie, and both were insanely good. Don't pass on the olive oil cake either. We wanted to have these sandwiches for a picnic along the river, although it ended up raining so we just ate them right outside the restaurant.
Montréal
Neighborhood bakery near where we were staying. I lost count of how many chocolate croissants I had from this place.
Montréal
The absinthe drink that they light on fire makes for a cool Instagram shot. This bar is worth checking out if you're in the area.
Montréal
One of my favorite spots to work all afternoon. Pretty large, and there's always room to sit with a laptop. Tons of natural sunlight.
Montréal
Decent spot to work from for an afternoon. It's near a really cute pedestrian-only strip of Prince Arthur Street.
Montréal
Great Italian cafe. Seems to be a popular hangout for the locals.
Montréal
This place is full of people working with laptops. Great for a working afternoon.
Montréal
Went for a late-night snack. Super dry and not good. We went here because it was the only kebab place open late at night, but it wasn't worth it.
Québec City
Nice little cafe/restaurant. Had my first ever croque monsier and it was delicious.
Istanbul
Fun Turkish music and dancing, but holy shit, some of the worst cocktails I've ever had in my life.
Montréal
Yummy ice cream. The Madagascar vanilla was really good. Perfect for a stroll along St. Denis, which is one of my favorite streets to walk along.
Istanbul
Decent spot for a Turkish coffee.
Sofia
Good Bulgarian food, but nothing really stands out compared to others.
Québec City
Vegan restaurant. Great food without being too expensive.
Highly recommend
Montréal
I never expected one of my favorite meals in Montreal to be $5 gnocchi in a Chinese takeout box, but this blew me away. We went here 3 times and it was so worth it every time.
Istanbul
Another tiny local spot with affordable, delicious kebabs.
Istanbul
Delicious, affordable, small local kebab spot with about 4 tables. We had both our first and last meal in Istanbul at this place.
Montréal
Tacos were fine. Nothing special, but in a great location for touristy stuff and relatively easy to get a last-minute table.
Montréal
My 2nd favorite of the two big bagel spots (the other being St-Viateur). They're close to each other, so totally worth a stop at both. Cash only.
Sofia
Great little window selling sausage pastries, among other things. Went here every day at the beginning of my month in Sofia. This place doesn't show up on Google Maps.
Montréal
Really cool-looking funky bar with cheap beer. I went in the early evening, but it seems like this would be a super fun spot to get drunk with a group of friends.
Sofia
Ehhh, not very good. Kinda dry.
Sofia
My go-to late night spot for a yummy, fast, cheap gyro.
Highly recommend
Sofia
Good Bulgarian food. Very traditional-feeling decorations and atmosphere. Seems a bit touristy, but definitely worth going.
Highly recommend
Sofia
Once I discovered this place, I went here almost every day. Tiny shop that sells delicious banitsas by weight. My favorite was Minced Meat.
Sofia
One of my go-to lunch spots. I love the chicken wrap. Very afforable and huge portions.
Istanbul
Great place to chill and take pictures with the super colorful stairs and umbrellas.
Chicago
Delicious Italian subs, but not quite as good as Bari. Much better giard though, and they sell it in gallons.
Montréal
Delicious filipino food.
Highly recommend
Montréal
Excellent ice cream, worth the long line. Get the soft serve swirl (rotating flavors, all delicious). We went here 3 times. Cash only.
Istanbul
I know this is the more famous wetburger spot, and they were great, but still not as good as Bambi Cafe.
Highly recommend
Québec City
We stayed here for hours, and I regret leaving because nothing else we found was as good. Super cool laid-back vibe that feels like you're in a cave. Get the mulled wine and maple whisky shots. Best french onion soup I had in Canada (super cheesy). They also have some tabletop games to play. I want to come back here someday.
Highly recommend
Montréal
24hr spot with a huge variety of poutine. Went here 3 times, once for dine-in and twice to-go. Bit of a tourist trap but absolutely worth a visit if you want poutine, especially late at night.
Chicago
Fantastic little Mexican spot in my hometown of Roselle. One of the best values in Chicagoland. Great food, HUGE portions, great prices, and so much free stuff both before and after the meal. I come here pretty much every time I'm in Roselle.
Highly recommend
Québec City
We were only in Quebec City for 3 days, but we went here twice because it was so good. The salmon crepe benedict was something I never knew I needed in my life.
Montréal
Good beer and nice little outdoor space.
Montréal
Cafe with industrial vibe. This place seems almost designed to accomodate people working on laptops.
Montréal
Great beer selection. Perfect day drinking spot.
Montréal
I love karaoke bars, but this place sucked. Super hot and drinks were really expensive. Probably fun if you're in college.
Sofia
Super hot and sweaty. Music waaaaay too loud. Don't go here.
Montréal
Got poutine. Exactly what I expected from a McDonald's poutine.
Sofia
Yeah, I know it's McDonald's, but the food quality here blew me away and changed my perception of McDonald's.
Highly recommend
Sofia
Delicious fried dough. We came here almost every week. My favorite was with blueberry jam and cream cheese.
Istanbul
Decent Turkish coffee. Awful service.
Montréal
Typical brewery with communal tables (including outside), games, and a food truck. Beer was really good. Great for killing time on a sunny afternoon.
Istanbul
The stuffed mussels from the street stand were good, but not as good as Moda Midyecisi nearby.
Montréal
Fun cocktail bar with interesting-looking drinks. I got a cocktail that came in a little disco ball. Super Instagrammable entryway with lots of neon paint and a blacklight.
Istanbul
The stuffed mussels from the street stand here are probably my favorite thing I ate in Istanbul. SO GOOD!
Misc Bulgaria
The donuts here are a great snack outside Rila Monastery.
Chicago
Tiny hot dog stand in Evanston next to the football stadium where I went to college. Get the Wildcat Burger, which has giard on it.
Montréal
Stopped in for a quick cocktail after getting bagels. Drinks were nothing special, but it was a cute little place. We didn't get food, but it looked amazing.
Montréal
Not worth the long line. Cool to watch the people hand-pulling the noodles in the window, but it doesn't taste as good as it looks.
Chicago
Great, simple, affordable Thai food. I go here pretty frequently when I'm in Chicago, both for dine-in and takeout.
Montréal
Meh. If you want Vietnamese food in Montréal, go to Pho Bang New York in Chinatown instead. Awesome location though.
Montréal
Some of the best Vietnamese food I've had in a while. Both the phở and vermicelli dishes were awesome. Way better than the overhyped noodle place across the street. We went here twice. Cash only.
Montréal
Food was on par with Pho Bang New York (which is incredible), but it's in a basement and significantly less crowded. Cash only.
Istanbul
Super cute place with a great, filling Turkish breakfast.
Montréal
Cute little cafe to sit with a laptop and work all afternoon. Small, but never crowded. Cold brew was very strong.
Montréal
My first meal in Montreal. Small, no-frills dumping spot. Delicious dumplings and super welcoming staff. Duluth is also an awesome street to walk along.
Montréal
One of my favorite experiences in Montreal was watching karaoke (with a live piano player) where every participant (including the bartenders) seemed like they could be a professional singer.
Highly recommend
Montréal
Delicious fried dough called a "Beaver Tail". Sort of a really thin doughnut. My favorite flavor is Killaloe Sunrise. Hazel Amour is also really good.
Highly recommend
Québec City
Delicious fried dough called a "Beaver Tail". Sort of a really thin doughnut. My favorite flavor is Killaloe Sunrise. Hazel Amour is also really good.
Bloomington
Cute cafe. Good food.
Istanbul
Another tiny local place with the best lentil soup I've ever had.
Montréal
Incredible soup dumplings.
Highly recommend
Montréal
Totally a tourist spot, but the smoked meat sandwich was delicious. You can avoid the long dine-in line by getting your food in the shorter to-go line and sitting at a public table on St. Laurent Street. Takeout here tastes just as good as dine-in.
Sofia
Decent spot on Vitosha. Nothing too special, but not bad either.
Highly recommend
Montréal
My favorite of the two big bagel spots in Mile End (the other being Fairmount). Get a sesame bagel for $1.20 (cash only). Most of the flavors will probably be cold, but the sesame bagels are always hot out of the oven unless you go late at night.
Sofia
The only club I went to in Sofia. It's fine. There are probably better ones.
Bloomington
Pretty-looking restaurant. Didn't get food. Just got an Old Fashioned, which was way too sweet for my liking.
Chicago
Great Italian food. Good vibes. Awesome free garlic bread.
Sofia
Most afforable food we had in Bulgaria. Served by weight. Some items were great, some were not. This place doesn't show up on Google Maps so I have no idea what it's called.
Highly recommend
Bloomington
Easily my favorite restaurant in Bloomington. I usually get the Artichoke & Kalamata Olive Dip and Creole BBQ Shrimp, both of which are incredible. I go here pretty much every time I'm in town.
Istanbul
Super fun, social vibe. Karaoke setup not great though. Breakfast was alright.
Montréal
Great for a quick lunch. Menu is small and food is ready seconds after ordering. Great house-made sodas. Awesome old-school vibe and very friendly staff. Get the Wilensky Special with swiss cheese.
Québec City
Great food and cocktails. Cool vibe.
Montréal
Pretty standard Irish pub. Fish and chips were yummy. Very friendly bartender.
Istanbul
Really good Turkish food. Great when you want to go a little beyond the standard items you can find everywhere.
Highly recommend
Sofia
Best non-street-food Bulgarian food I've had. A little more upscale and pricier, but well worth it.
